The Magic Lantern Trilogy

The Magic Lantern trilogy has taken nearly 20 years to research and write. With the use of real-life testimonials and news reports Bowers truly has crafted an authentic, captivating and enduring story, which she says, “Is not just intended for children, but for all ages. I want to excite people about history by immersing them in a fictional, fast-paced escapade with a factual core which the reader can investigate for themselves and discover another level to the book.”

A murder. A mysterious stranger. A missing diamond. A haunted Magic Lantern. What dark secret ties them all together?

When Sandy is jolted awake by a strange light, she’s whisked from present-day Glasgow to the chaotic streets of 1908. Teaming up with a fearless band of ragamuffin boys, she dives into a race against time to uncover the chilling truth behind these connected events.

But as danger closes in, one question remains to be answered: Will Sandy ever get back home?

Reviews:

“Talk about leaving them wanting more, this book is excellently well written. Research, characterisation and plot, all add up to a real page turner. It certainly has all the ingredients for a belter of a trilogy.” Tony Roper (Author and Actor)

“The Magic Lantern” is a well-crafted tale written in the easily flowing but gripping style of an accomplished literary artist. The robust familiarity with Glasgow lends both credibility and humanity to the characters in this thriller of a story.

The plot unfolds with twists through time that hold the reader’s imagination to keep turning page after page. The background to the changing scenes is meticulously and seamlessly explained within the narrative of the prose, holding the reader’s interest.

A cliff hanger at the very end leaves the reader searching for the rest of the story in the final pages before the back cover. However, we’ll have to wait until part two of the trilogy to find out what happens next! Jane Hird. ( Author, “The Big Rescue”)

Glasgow's Lost Theatre

Music-hall stars such as Jack Buchanan, Charles Coburn, Harry Lauder, Dan Leno and Vesta Tilley all trod the boards at what started life as the Britannia Music Hall, as did a certain Stan Laurel, who made his debut there in 1906. Under the management of A.E. Pickard, the Panopticon, as it became known, widened its range of attractions to include freak shows, waxworks, a carnival and a zoo, continuing to draw the crowds until 1938. During the next sixty years, however, its very existence faded into memory as the building was converted and its auditorium sealed off. It was only in 1997 that Judith Bowers found her way into the theatre, since when she has made it her mission to bring the Britannia back to life. In this book Judith Bowers, traces the history of this magical place and the people who performed there, and tells the fascinating story of the Britannia Panopticon Music Hall.
